A/Prof Gemma Sharp

A/Prof Gemma Sharp is the Head of the Body Image and Eating Disorders Research Group in the Department of Neuroscience at Monash University and an NHMRC Emerging Leadership 2 Fellow (2023–2027). With a diverse academic background spanning molecular biology, oncology, psychology, and clinical psychology, her research bridges medical science and mental health. Gemma’s work focuses on understanding the factors contributing to body image concerns and eating disorders and developing innovative, technology-based therapeutic interventions such as chatbots and mobile apps. Her research has been widely published and featured in mainstream media, and she regularly contributes expert commentary through television and radio.
An award-winning scientist and clinical psychologist, Gemma has received numerous national and international accolades, including the Paul Bourke Award for Early Career Research and the Victorian Young Tall Poppy Award. Alongside her research, she serves as Senior Clinical Psychologist at the Statewide Women’s Mental Health Service at Alfred Health and is a Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician and Board-Approved Supervisor. Gemma has also played key leadership roles in professional organisations, including ANZAED and ASPOG, reflecting her dedication to advancing clinical practice and mental health research in Australia.
